Court Issues Arrest Warrant For Mamprugu Paramount Chief
The Bolgatanga High Court has issued an arrest warrant for the paramount chief of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, (Nayiri) Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II.
The arrest warrant also covers his kingmakers and the “illegally” installed chief of Bawku, Alhaji Seidu Abagre.
The warrant was issued on February 18, 2023.
It was issued in accordance with Section 71 of the Criminal and other offences procedures ACT 1960 (ACT 30).
“Upon hearing the affidavit of Lieutenant Colonel Ajibadeck Benjamin Baba (Retired) for an Order of Motion Ex-parte for warrant arrest and upon hearing Mrs Joyce Deborah (Principal State Attorney), Priscilla Lartey and Kofi Hartford (Assistant State Attorneys) for the Applicant, it is hereby ordered that Warrant arrest is issued for the arrest of Alhaji Seidu Abagre: (Kulga II) Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga (Paramount Chief of Mamprugu Traditional Area and his Kingmakers)”, the warrant read.
Background
This comes after the reports that the Nayiri installed one Alhaji Seidu Abagre as the Bawku Naba at Nareligu on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, despite an already existing and legally recognised Bawku Naba- Naba Abugrago Azoka II.
This was condemned by some Members of Parliament from the Upper East Region and the government in press statements.
A joint statement from six MPs said the action of the Nayiri is “unacceptable and should not come from a person of his stature”.
They further said the enskinment of the new chief is null and void.
“Meanwhile, the Members of Parliament for the area call on the people of the Kusaug Traditional Area and its environs to remain calm and assure them that this unlawful conduct will not stand”, Hon Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central; Hon Cletus Apul Avoka, MP for Zebilla; Hon Abanga Abdulai, MP for Binduri, Hon Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba, MP for Pusiga; Hon Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, MP for Timpane and; Hon Albert Akuka Alalzuuga, MP for Garu said in the statement.
The government through the Ministry of Information stated that the purported enskinment of a new chief was illegal and a threat to national security.
“The security agency has therefore been directed to arrest and prosecute any other person who holds himself out as a Bawku Naba.”
