Child Discipline Shouldn’t Result in Physical Harm- Gender Ministry

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has denounced the use of violent disciplinary measures on children by guardians and parents.

It argues that discipline must never result in physical harm to a child, as it sent out a cautionary note to parents, guardians, and caregivers.

It indicated that the use of violent disciplinary actions constituted child abuse and was punishable by law.

“Protecting children is indeed a shared responsibility. Families, communities, traditional and religious leaders, and the public all have a role to play to ensure that children grow up in a safe, caring, and protective environment.”

It comes after it secured the arrest of a viral child abuser after notifying the police service.

“The police have since arrested the suspect involved, and the investigation is currently ongoing.”

The Ministry reported that it was closely working with the Police Service and other relevant child protection agencies to ensure that the case is thoroughly investigated and that justice is served in accordance with the law.

It reiterated its commitment to the protection of children and will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to prevent such incidents and to ensure that perpetrators of child abuse are held accountable.
