Charges Dropped Against 7 Democracy Hub Protesters
The state has declined to pursue charges against seven of the 53 Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested for unlawful assembly three weeks ago.
In court on October 22, 2024, the judge was informed of plans to discontinue the case against Kingsley Asiedu, Seth Cofie, Vera Gloria Louis, Nii Quaye Hammond, Manuel Biney, Dorsese Joseph and Ernest Acheampong.
The seven were among nine accused persons who reappeared in court.
The remaining two accused persons will have new charges filed against them, the State Prosecutor told the court.
Reacting to this, FixtheCountry from which Democracy Hub emerged expressed its expectation to see charges against the remaining accused persons dropped.
“7 out. 46 left,” it posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Forty-two protesters who joined the demonstration against illegal mining which started on September 21 and ended on September 23, were arrested by the police on the second day. In all, over 53 were arrested during and after the protest.
According to a statement by the police, the demonstrators unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection and attacked Police officers performing their lawful duties.
It said they entered a Police vehicle, removed the ignition key and threw it away, pushing down Police crash barriers, “obstructing traffic, causing unlawful damage, and disturbing the peace among others”.
