Burma Camp To Host 2024 Edition Of Green Ghana Day

The fourth edition of the Green Ghana Day will be hosted at the headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ministry of Defence in Accra in the Greater Accra Region.

This is according to information from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

Last year, the tree planting event was held at the University of Ghana after Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II did the country the honour of launching it at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on May 17, 2023.

This year’s edition will be held at the Burma Camp with a target of planting 10 million trees across the country.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor on March 19, paid a working visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah to formally inform him about the decision to hold the event at his seat.

He also appealed to the CDS for their collaboration in ensuring a successful programme through the provision of logistical support.

“With this year’s edition slated for the headquarters of the GAF, Hon. Jinapor thought it right to initiate early engagement with the CDS and also court his support,” the Ministry said in a statement.

The Green Ghana Day was instituted by the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2021 as an aggressive national afforestation/reforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.

It was first observed on June 11, 2021, when an estimated seven million tree seedlings were planted across the country.

The second edition was observed on June 10, 2022, while the third was held on June 9, 2024.
