Burkina Faso Bans Cereals Export to Ghana

Junta-led Burkina Faso has banned the export of rice, millet, maize and sorghum to Ghana.

This was confirmed in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on February 25, 2025.

The communique referenced two different correspondences from the neighbouring country to advise Ghanaian traders to comply with the new measure.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the public that the government of Burkina Faso, through a joint communique NO.023-0017/MDICAPME/MARAH/MATDS/MEF dated 19th December 2023, has informed of the placement of a ban on the export of cereals (Rice, Millet, Maize, Sorghum) and White Beans (Cowpea) from its territory.

“In another communique No. 024-0017/MICA/MARAH/MEF dated 13th November 2024, Burkina Faso is reminding buyers of grains and cereals from that country that the ban is still in place.”

According to the Ghanaian government, the measure must be adhered to avoid sanctions.

“Thus, Ghanaian traders and businesses engaged in the importation of these commodities from Burkina Faso, are advised to take note of this directive and comply accordingly to avoid any sanctions and cessations.”
