Buhari Was An African Integrationist- Akufo-Addo

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has joined the world to mourn the passing of former Nigerian President and his good friend, Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement, he celebrated him as a “staunch African integrationist” as he recalled the frequent visits of the late leader to Ghana during his youthful days.

“The redoubtable Muhammadu Buhari was an outstanding Nigerian patriot and a staunch African integrationist…{He} belonged to the generation of young West Africans who became involved in the tumultuous events of the early years of independence, including the Nigerian Civil War.”

He also recollected memories from their collaborations as heads of state including instituting the Accra Initiative, a potent blueprint for strengthening operational collaboration against terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and the downward drift of terrorist activities from the Sahel to the Coastal States.

“He led the mighty Federal Republic of Nigeria to sign up for the African Continental Free Trade Area, thereby enhancing considerably, its prospects of success.”

“His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, will be remembered for his exemplary patriotism, his commitment to a united Nigeria, and his deep concern for the social and economic development of the Nigerian people. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty.”

The former soldier passed away on July 13, 2025, at a clinic in London aged 82.

He was elected President in 2015 after three failed attempts and exited office in 2023 after securing a second term in 2019.
