Boycottting Vetting Doesn’t Stop Me from Challenging Nominee Qualification – MP
The Member of Parliament for Bia East constituency and member of the Finance Committee, Hon. Richard Acheampong, says that despite the Minority’s boycott of the vetting of the Deputy Minister nominee today, it does not stop him from raising issues concerning his eligibility.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament today, Hon. Acheampong affirmed the Minority leadership’s position on the boycott of the vetting and also stated that every member has the right to participate in a meeting or whatever. So, if the Minority did not show up for the vetting, once the committee forms a quorum and schedules a meeting time, they can proceed with the vetting.
“Once a quorum is formed, they can go ahead and do the vetting, but that is not the final point. The report will come to the plenary, and members will take a decision. Since I’m not a member of the committee, my absence or boycotting the vetting does not stop me from raising my reservations on the floor if the nominee is not eligible for the position,” he emphasized.
Earlier today, the Minority in Parliament announced its decision to boycott the vetting of Minister for Trade and Industry Designate, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo.
In a press statement, the group noted that its members on the Appointments Committee are unable to bring themselves to join the Majority as they are affronted by the large size of the government and its accompanied financial implications to the State.
