Black Stars Don’t Deserve Any More Than Group Stage- Odoi
Black Stars defender Denis Odoi asserts the team does not deserve to progress to the next level of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament currently ongoing in Cote d’Ivoire.
This, he says, is due to the poor defensive display put up by the team so far in the tournament which has seen them concede six goals since January 14 when their campaign began with Cape Verde.
He spilled his observation to the press after a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on January 22 at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.
Asked how he felt, he retorted, “Disappointed.”
He continued, “If you look at the goals we conceded, we don’t deserve any more.”
“Just see the goals we conceded. They are stupid, stupid mistakes. If you give goals like this, you cannot compete,” he explained further before leaving behind the press.
Ghana would have recorded a draw in their first game against Cape Verde but a tattered defensive side saw a late goal by the opponents retake their lead.
In their second game against Egypt, Ghana threw away their lead twice to end 2-2 against the Pharaohs.
Chris Hughton’s side converted two penalties in both halves to take the lead in their last group game against Mozambique. However, the Mambas came from behind to draw against the Black Stars after winning a penalty sanctioned by substitute Andre Ayew in 90+1 minutes and converting a corner three minutes later.
They are now third on the league table with little chance of qualifying with two points in three games.
Meanwhile, Group B leaders Cape Verde and Egypt have qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
