Be Careful With Promises: MPs Not Agents Of Development – Parliamentary Aspirants Admonished
Majority Leader in Parliment and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Osei-Kyei Mensah -Bonsu has cautioned Parlimentary Candidates (PCs) seeking to become Members of Parliament (MPs) to desist from promising electorates infrascture development in their respective constituencies.
“Those people don’t know the work of Parliment. The core duty of an MP is to make laws. It is only the President who can make a promise and fulfill it”, the legislator cautioned when he spoke to a range of issues on Manhyia-based Opemsuo 104.7FM.
According to Hon Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, New Patrotic Party (NPP) lawmaker, individuals seeking to unseat incumbent MPs will sometimes promise “heaven on earth” which will never materialize after becoming MPs for obvious reasons.
“It is not MP’s work to construct roads or ensure development in the area. The power is with the Executive President”, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs pointed out to host, George Opoku Mensah Agudey during a face-to-face interview on “Nkwantananso” talkshow.
According to him, after serving as a Legislator for 23 years, he is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the career of a Parliamentarian was a noble one.
“I can testify from my 23 years as a Member of Parliament that it has been most gratifying and challenging but I have no regrets as it has given me the very opportunity to serve my country.”
