Bawumia To Launch Oyster Card Replica In Ghana
The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will be launching a duplicate of Britain’s transport credit card in Ghana next week.
Called the Tap & Go Transport Initiative, it forms part of the government’s digitalization drive across all sectors of the economy.
A statement released by the Metro Mass Transport System said the initiative is aimed at formalizing the informal transport sector with the help of a well-structured and tested technology.
“This project will help to build a single system for the entire transport eco-system for all the various transport operators to enhance efficiency and bring about transport fare stability in Ghana.”
It will be launched on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the head office of the Metro Mass Transit Limited by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Veep first brought the initiative to public attention during the annual General Council Meeting of the Church of Pentecost on May 3, 2023.
“Trotros, VIP buses, Ayalolo, Metro Mass {will come later on}. The whole public sector is going to go and private sector transport is going to go on what we call a tap-and-go system. When you go to England, they have the Oyster card that you travel with. Ghana is also going to have an Oyster card,” he said.
