Bawku Mediation: Otumfuo’s Report is Fact-based, and Forward-looking for Peace- Presidency

The Presidency has accepted to implement the recommendations of the report on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene’s mediation of the Bawku Conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis.

It followed what it called a careful review and deliberation of the report presented on December 16, 2025.

In a definitive statement, the government endorsed the Mediation Report and its Recommendations that Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka Il is the lawful Bawku Naba and that Alhaji Seidu Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri to assume an alternative traditional role.

The government noted that it will immediately facilitate the safe movement of Alhaji Seidu Abagre to Nalerigu.

The government further requested His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to continue lending his distinguished leadership and moral authority to subsequent reconciliation efforts aimed at fostering enduring peace and harmonious coexistence between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities.

Boosting Development
The Presidency, while acknowledging the development deficit that has been created by the conflict in Bawku, said the Minister for Finance had been directed to establish a One Billion Ghana Cedi (GHS 1,000,000,000) Bawku Revitalisation Fund.

It explained that the Fund shall be disbursed over a three-year period between 2026 and 2028 and will be dedicated to the reconstruction and development of priority infrastructure, including roads, healthcare, education, dam and irrigation facilities for all-year-round agriculture, security installations, and economic and commercial facilities, to restore Bawku to its historic position as a significant economic and trading hub in Northern Ghana.

It will be managed by a high-level Committee Chaired by the Minister for Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, who also serves as Acting Minister for Defence and other members, including the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donaltus Akamuguri; and the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mahama Ayariga.

Support for Reconciliation
The Presidency further called on traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations, religious bodies, development partners, and the broader citizenry to support the peace-building and reconciliation process in the spirit of unity, restraint, and patriotism.

President Mahama urged all parties to accept and faithfully abide by the conclusions and recommendations of the Mediation Report in the supreme interest of peace and national stability.

“Government expresses its profound gratitude to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, The Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahama Sheriga I|, the Bawku Naba, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka Il, and all individuals, institutions, and stakeholders whose goodwill, cooperation, and commitment contributed to the success of this historic mediation process.”
