Bawku Conflict: Exercise Restraint as Asantehene Mediates Dispute- Ayariga to Youth

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has urged the youth of conflict-ridden Bawku to exercise restraint as the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, steps in to mediate the dispute.

The lawmaker says he remains committed to the peace process initiated by His Majesty the Asantehene.

According to him, the overlord of Kusaug, Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka Il and the Overlord of Mamprugu Nayiri Naa Bhagu Mahami Sheriga have all committed to the process and are fully participating.

The call comes after the fatal violent confrontation between the police and the youth in Bawku and a subsequent vandalization.

The violence resulted in an attempt to burn his private residence in Bawku.

In a statement, he said, “I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government remains committed to its promise to ensure justice and lasting peace. My condolences to the bereaved and sympathies to the injured.”

Though he said he sides with the youth of Kusaug on their position against another person carrying himself as the Bawku Naba, he trusts the leadership of the Occupant of the Golden Stool.

“The matter was referred by then President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to handle. Upon coming into office on January 7th 2025, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama requested His Majesty Otumfuo to continue with the process. I support President John Dramani Mahama’s decision for very good reasons.”

He continued, “I therefore once again appeal to everyone to exercise restraint and allow the peace process led by Otumfuo to come to its logical conclusion.”
