Bawku Conflict: Ayariga Condemns Destruction of Statue and Attack on Military

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the recent violence in connection with the protracted chieftaincy conflict in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
It was reported over the weekend that some military personnel destroyed a statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area Asigri Abugrago Azoka II and brutalised residents.
In retaliation, some “unknown” youth launched a gun attack on a vehicle escorted by soldiers.
Condemning both acts, the leader demanded an investigation into the incident.
“I demand an immediate investigation by the senior hierarchy of the military. In the same vein, I also condemn the brutality of the military yesterday 13th July 2025. The violent gun attack by unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned and further attacks must cease.”
He further called for restraint among the youth to make way for the ongoing resolution dialogue.
“I however appeal to the Kusasis youth to calm down as the Government takes urgent steps to investigate the infiltrations into the ranks of the military by elements who seek to politicize and further destabilize the situation in Bawku.”
Ayariga also condoled with the families of the bereaved and those who have suffered military brutalities as a result of the incidents.
