Bawku Conflict: Asantehene Has Led “Productive” Discussions- Mahama

In an update on the ongoing mediation process to resolve the longstanding Bawku conflict, President John Dramani Mahama has said that the Asantehene has had “productive” discussions with the feuding factions.
He therefore commended the crucial mediation efforts being led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
“We’ve had productive discussions, and I particularly appreciate Naa-Yiri Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga’s vital cooperation and the concessions both sides are willing to make for lasting peace.”
The President of Ghana made this disclosure during a courtesy call by a delegation of Mamprugu Chiefs on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
During the meeting, he reiterated the critical importance of resolving the protracted conflict in Bawku as he reflected on how the once vibrant commercial hub is now a pale shadow of itself.
“The sight of armed youth and the exodus of professionals speaks to the immense toll this conflict has taken on everyone in the area, and indeed, on our national peace. Nobody is happy about this situation, and it requires our urgent and collective resolve.”
He reaffirmed the government’s unrelenting commitment to ensuring safety and fostering dialogue.
HE Mahama added, “I urge all stakeholders to speed up this essential mediation process. Peace in Bawku is not just a local issue; it is a matter of national importance.”
