August 4 Isn’t a Holiday; Here Is Why

The Ministry of Interior has reminded Ghanaians that August 4 is no longer a statutory public holiday.

It comes after the incumbent government amended the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

In a Facebook post, the Ministry announced, “Please be informed that 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 is 𝐧𝐨𝐭 a public holiday.”

August 4 was designated as a Founders’ Day public holiday by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his amendments to the Public Holidays Act in 2018.

The amendment gave recognition to the celebrated ‘Big Six’ whose efforts contributed to the achievement of Independence.

Prior to this, the country commemorated Founder’s Day, which only honoured the country’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who fought for independence for the then Gold Coast and present-day Ghana.

It was celebrated as a national holiday on his birthday, September 21.

In the review under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, September 21 became a commemorative day and not a holiday.

Meanwhile, under the recent amendment by President John Dramani Mahama, September 21 has been reinstated as Founder’s Day, while Founders’ Day has been scrapped.
