Asantehene’s Verdict on Akrodie Stool Deferred
The final verdict that will resolve the chieftaincy dispute over the Akrodie Stool in the Ahafo Region will be delivered next week by the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He postponed his verdict after the Asanteman Council members individually offered their verdict following the presentation of a Committee report on the case on September 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.
The dispute is between the Ekuona Clan Head, Baffour Awuah and one Kwaku Twumasi, also a member of the clan. It emanated from Twumasi’s opposition to the position of Baffour as the Head which offers him the right to choose a candidate to occupy the vacant Akrodie Stool.
According to Twumasi, Baffour does not belong to the Ekuona Clan but rather the Aduana and therefore illegitimately occupies the Head position.
This prompted Baffour to invoke the Great Oath in his defence, noting that he is of the Ekuona bloodline.
Both parties were subjected to a committee probe during which they presented their evidence and witnesses for scrutiny. The report of the Committee was presented to the Asanteman Council headed by Otumfuo on September 26, 2024.
The findings of the report affirmed that the stool was indeed for the Ekuona Clan and found the claims of Twumasi legitimate.
Nananom however were divided over the findings. As some sided with it, others found reasonable grounds to oppose it and throw their weight behind Baffour.
“The Committee focused all their attention on letters and documents which were tendered in as evidence. Meanwhile, issues pertaining to royal line cannot be determined with documents,” Oyokohene Nana Agyekum Ababio said.
“Baffour was able to tell where they migrated from and how they ended up at Akrodie. He was also able to tell us how the name Akrodie came about and thereby we believe he is indeed of the Ekuona Clan,” another said.
It is now up to the King of the Asante Kingdom to deliver the final judgement on the case.
“Next week Thursday I will deliver my verdict to settle this once and for all.”
