Asantehene Unveils Reconciliation Plans For Mamprusis and Kusasis

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, as part of the mediation efforts in the Bawku dispute, has announced plans to reconcile the Kusasis and the Mamprusis.
The mediation process now at the reconciliation stage will be spearheaded by a committee made up of the National Peace Council, legal representatives of the factions and other relevant bodies.
His Majesty made this known after presenting the mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 16, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
As part of this stage, the Asantehene said a firearm surrender incentive will be instituted to motivate residents with firearms to surrender them.
As part of the incentive, Otumfuo said that about GHC500 will be given to persons who surrender arms in their possession.
“While talking to them also, I realised that arms and weapons were there. I spoke to them, and I think we can find a way to surrender them and get some appeasement of about GHC500. This won’t be from the government but by myself and the committee to be formed.”
His Majesty is optimistic that this will sanitise the environment and make it safer for residents.
“I tested the pulse, and I believe it can be done.”
The Bawku conflict has been protracted and intractable, dating back to the precolonial era.
Post-independence Ghana has witnessed multiple shifts in government recognition of the Kusasi and Mamprusi claims to traditional authority.
Changes in governments often altered official recognition, creating a cycle of instability and undermining conflict-resolution mechanisms.
