Asantehene Unhappy About Discord Among Chiefs and their Queens
The King of the Asante Kingdom, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed concerns about disagreements between some chiefs and their queens in his realm.
During his last meeting for the year 2024 with the Asanteman Council on Monday, December 16, 2024, Otumfuo said these discords are mostly fueled by a disregard for the financial welfare of the Queens.
He recognizes that queens are shortchanged in allocating proceeds from stools, leaving them dejected and neglected.
This, Otumfuo, affirmed, in the long run, creates avenues for queens to find selfish means to secure their interests.
“I’ve observed disagreements between Nananom and Ahemaanom in many jurisdictions. Most queens try to entrench the male stools to their sons due to concerns about their sustenance. This is a major factor in these disagreements. Some queens are also disrespectful.”
In places where the Queen fails at getting her choice enstooled, disagreement is birthed between her and the chief, he observes.
To solve this, he has announced plans to review the allocation of proceeds made from the stool to include queens and secure their welfare and interest.
His Majesty is confident that such a review will help eliminate the discord.
“We need to relook at the allocation of all proceeds that come to Nananom and how much to allot to queens. It won’t be done behind closed doors, we will do it openly so that the queens and all others involved will know their portion of all proceeds that come from the stool. In that case, the queens won’t try to subvert successors.”
“Chieftaincy is now being diluted with education. Many learned people are coming on board. Queens must look at competence as the primary criterion to rule. If we eradicate the cheating against queens, they will be objective and modest in the election of candidates for stools. We will look at that in the next year.”
