Asantehene Pushes For Collaboration Between Canadian Universities and KNUST

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has set out on a mission to strike a collaborative deal between his university and universities in Canada.

Leveraging his office as the Asantehene, Otumfuo suggested a technical education distance programme when the High Commissioner of Canada to Ghana paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to pay homage and discuss matters on diplomatic relations and development.

In their conversation, the King identified technical know-how as a major deficiency in the country’s education- a problem he said was a championing cause of high unemployment rate in the country.

According to him, the products Ghana’s universities are churning out lack the needed skill to set up their businesses and provide employment for others.

These graduates, he noted, tend to seek employment after bagging degrees.

He therefore suggested a technical assistance in education to Ghanaians from Canada as he observes Canada is versed in that area.

“Its either we collaborate to identify what courses should be taught in these schools so that after education they can self-employ and set employment systems. Those are areas I seek for collaboration. Now that we have a new Minister for Education, we will encourage him.”

In addition to that, he called for a collaboration between his University and that of Canada.

The collaboration, he said, could be to offer long distance educational programmes.

“My University here, we will like to collaborate, even long distance learning so that we can collaborate with Canadian Universities in relation to technical education that would help the advancement of the students.”
