Asantehene Mourns Late Akyempimhene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene has mourned Oheneba Adusei Poku, Akyempimhene following his passing four months ago.

The final day of the burial rites of the 77-year-old Asante Prince took place at Akyeremade at Adum in Kumasi on November 18, 2024.

The Occupant of the Golden Stool as tradition demands was present to superintend over the event which drew hundreds of people from across the country.

As the faithful servant who dedicated 42 years of his precious life to the service of the Golden Stool, the former diplomat was given a befitting burial rite with the honourable presence of the King on the third day of his three-day event.

Otumfuo paid respects to his son upon his arrival before taking his seat among the mourners.

Asanteman did not disappoint, they joined the Overlord to honour the memory of the late head of the Kyidom Division of the Kumasi Traditional Council.

The immediate and extended family of Oheneba, various Divisions, friends, sympathisers and many others were present to bid final farewell.

Oheneba died on July 10, 2024, at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after a short illness.

Born Nana Osei Tutu to Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, the 15th King of the Asante Kingdom, Oheneba Adusei Poku was enstooled the 12th Akyempimhene in 1982.

He succeeded Oheneba Boakye Dankwa at the age of 35 years. Oheneba thus occupied the stool for 42 years, making him the longest occupant of the stool.

His reign saw him serving two Asante Monarchs- Otumfuo Opoku Ware II from 1982 to 1999 and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II from 1999 to date.

In recognition of Oheneba’s distinguished service to Asanteman and Ghana, the title of an ‘Honorary Fellow’ was also conferred upon him by Akuafo Hall, University of Ghana (Legon).
