Ghana football legend Charles Asampong Taylor has launched a sharp criticism at Asante Kotoko SC, insisting the Porcupine Warriors no longer possess the quality expected of a club of their stature.
His comments come at a time when Kotoko continue to struggle for consistency in the Ghana Premier League, despite briefly returning to winning ways.
Kotoko recently redeemed themselves with a 0-2 away victory over Young Apostles in Wenchi, a result many supporters hoped would spark a revival.
However, they failed to build on that momentum last Sunday, settling for a frustrating 0-0 draw at home against ten-man Vision FC, a performance that reignited concerns about the team’s sharpness and creativity.
The Reds now sit fourth on the league table with 39 points, seven behind the leaders Medeama SC. Their next game is a challenging away trip to face Karela United in Tamale — a match that could further shape their season.
Reacting to the club’s level of play and overall squad quality, Taylor did not hold back. As someone who previously starred for both Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, as well as the Black Stars, he believes the club’s current squad simply does not match the expectations of the brand.
“Asante Kotoko is a big team without big players. Only 30% of the current players deserve to wear the team jersey,” he told Angel TV in Accra.
His statement has sparked conversations among supporters, with many wondering whether the team has enough quality to mount a serious late push in the league.
