Asante Akyem: Dampong Citizens Declare War on Galamsey
The Dampong Citizens for Development, a coalition of indigenes from the Dampong community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality in the Ashanti Region, has declared a determined stand against the growing threat of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in the area.
This decisive move comes in response to a surge in galamsey activities, which are rapidly taking root in the farming community.
The illegal mining operations are wreaking havoc on rivers, forests, and farmlands, significantly disrupting the livelihoods of residents who rely on agriculture.
At a press conference held in Dampong on Monday, September 30, Chief Inspector Paul Agyei, speaking on behalf of the Dampong Citizens for Development, voiced the community’s outrage.
“Our attention has been drawn to the fact that some nation wreckers, wicked, greedy and selfish people have invaded our community and destroying our rivers and farmlands.”
The Chief Inspector stressed that the current generation has a duty to protect the land and water resources, urging residents to resist any activities that would endanger these vital assets.
He issued a stern warning to locals who are collaborating with the illegal miners, demanding that they cease their activities immediately.
“Now, to those hiding behind this evil and selfish activity, stop whatever you are doing with them immediately because we shall not forgive you if we find you.”
The officer also called out landowners who sell their lands to galamsey operators, as well as those who support the illegal miners by providing food, accommodation, or transport. He made it clear that anyone found assisting the miners in any way would face the full wrath of the community.
Chief Inspector Agyei further assured the community of the group’s unwavering support for anyone who might face intimidation or retaliation for taking a stand against galamsey.
“We do not want any galamsey in Asante Akyem Dampong.”
“I will urge you not to be afraid of any attack. As leaders and as a group, we will stand with you and fight together, our lawyers have assured us that they will ensure the law takes its course against anyone who may wrongfully victimize you,” he emphazised.
