AngloGold Ashanti to Introduce Women’s Apprenticeship Programme

AngloGold Ashanti is set to launch an apprenticeship programme this year aimed at equipping young women in its operational communities with essential technical skills.
The initiative seeks to empower women by providing them with the expertise needed to enter technical and engineering fields, traditionally dominated by men.
Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti, Mr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, announced the programme during a durbar held in Obuasi to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day, themed “Accelerate Action for Women’s Equity.”
He emphasized the company’s dedication to improving the lives of people, particularly women in its host communities, by fostering inclusivity in the mining industry.
While acknowledging the male-dominated nature of the sector, Mr. Pobee highlighted AngloGold Ashanti’s ongoing efforts to increase female participation since the company’s redevelopment project began in 2018.
To support this goal, the company has introduced several initiatives, including the establishment of a baby care centre to assist nursing mothers in balancing their careers with family responsibilities.
Furthering its commitment to workplace inclusivity, the company has extended maternity leave from three to six months, provided tailored uniforms for pregnant employees, and ensured the availability of female-specific washrooms and changing rooms.
Mr. Pobee encouraged women to take advantage of these opportunities, stressing that AngloGold Ashanti offers significant career prospects for female miners, engineers, and other professionals.
Reflecting on recent efforts to support female leadership, he noted that in 2024, AngloGold Ashanti fully sponsored five women business leaders to participate in a transformative program in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative provided participants with networking opportunities alongside women from various countries.
Under his leadership, Mr. Pobee expressed his desire to see more women entrepreneurs thriving in mining and related industries. He reassured prospective employees that at AngloGold Ashanti, opportunities are based on qualifications and skills, ensuring a work environment free from discrimination or intimidation.
