Amoakohene Joins Calls For Return of Asante Looted Artefacts

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has added his voice to the demand for the return of Asante artefacts looted during the Sagrenti War at Fomena in 1874 between the British and the Asante Kingdom.
He issued the powerful call for the repatriation of African artefacts following a solemn pilgrimage and dramatic reenactment of the Sagrenti War at Fomena.
The event, which took place on 1 April, formed part of this year’s AshantiFest 2026 celebrations.
Dr Amoakohene joined traditional leaders, elders, and residents of Fomena to honour the memory and sacrifices of Asante forefathers who defended the kingdom during the historic conflict.
The moving reenactment brought the battles vividly to life, underscoring their lasting impact on communities, heritage, and identity.
The Minister’s renewed appeal is in line with H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s call at the United Nations General Assembly for the repatriation of African artefacts stolen during the colonial era.
