Álvaro Arbeloa Replaces Xabi Alonso at Madrid

Real Madrid has appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as the head coach of the first team after sacking Xabi Alonso a day after Real lost to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Announcing Xabi’s departure on Monday night, Madrid said they had mutually agreed to “end his time as coach of the first team.”

The club, while thanking him for his service in the past seven months, said the club will always be his home.

“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication throughout this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”

The club immediately released a second statement announcing the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa, the coach of the club’s B team, as the successor.

The 42-year-old has spent his entire career as a coach in the Real Madrid youth academy since 2020.

Madrid is second in LaLiga, four points behind Barcelona and seventh in the Champions League, having won four of their six games, losing the other two.
