Akwatia By-election: It’s a National Security Matter; NDC Dep General Secretary On Ongoing Road Construction

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has justified the decision to commence the construction of the Akwatia Kusi Road in the Eastern Region.

According to him, the unmotorable state of the road is a “national security” matter and thereby the need to deal with it immediately.

“Coming here to even supervise, you realise that there is a road network that Akufo-Addo abandoned, that when you use, you are likely to get an accident. It’s a national security matter.”

He said constructing the road has the safety of the residents as the underlying motive.

“That area should be fixed so that by the time we finish the election, we don’t lose lives. When we talk of a deficit, we have to hold the Akufo-Addo government responsible. They abandoned development and prioritised stealing money.

“We just passed there. Your vehicles cannot use the road. The politicians and NPP executives are using land cruisers, but you are not using a land cruiser, so if you pass there, you will get into an accident. So if they are fixing it, it is to prevent fatalities and casualties.”

He emphasised that the project is not a political gimmick to collect votes.

“We don’t do projects for votes. I can assure you, President Mahama is not somebody who discriminates. After the election, you will see physical development and growth in the lives of the people.”

Akwatia has gone to the polls to elect a parliamentary representative after their MP passed away.
