AKufo- Addo to Give SONA Tomorrow
The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament tomorrow, February 27, in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
This constitutional provision mandates the President to address the nation through Parliament at the commencement and closure of each session.
The announcement of the President’s impending address was made in Parliament earlier in February by the former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
He stated, “Mr. Speaker, in accordance with Article 67 of the Constitution, H.E. the President will deliver to the House a message on the State of the Nation on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. Honourable members are entreated to avail themselves for the task ahead.”
The SONA is very important in a democratic country as it serves as a crucial platform for the President to provide a comprehensive overview of the nation’s current state, his achievements, and future plans and policies for the nation.
It also serves as a platform for the President to transparently communicate the progress made in various sectors of the the economy such as security, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
SONA serves as an avenue for the government to outline its policy objectives for the year. This sets the tone for the parliamentary session and helps shape public discourse on governance.
