Akufo-Addo In Egypt For COP27
The President of Ghana has left the country for Egypt where the 27th annual United Nations (UN) summit on climate is taking place.
He left the country on Saturday, November 5, 2022, the Jubilee House said in a press release.
The summit which started on Sunday, November 6 and is expected to end on November 18 is being attended by world leaders. Decisions will be taken on steps to limit global temperature rises at the summit.
This year’s “Conference of the Parties” (COP) is taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
The summit will focus on food security, innovative finance for climate and development, investing in future energy, water security and climate change and the sustainability of vulnerable communities.
The Jubilee House says President Akufo-Addo will deliver a statement on Ghana’s position on Climate Change, as well as measures put in place to combat the threat it poses.
Last year, during his address to world leaders in Glasgow during COP26, President Akufo-Addo pointed out that it would be “wholly unfair” for the world to demand that Africa abandons the exploitation of its resources as a means of dealing with threats of climate change at the expense of its development.
“The Almighty has blessed our lands with abundant natural resources, and it would be wholly unfair for the world to demand that Africa abandons the exploitation of these same resources needed to finance her development, and help us to cope better with the threat of climate change, at a time when many countries on the continent have only just discovered them.”
Relaying his disappointment in the West for reneging on their commitment to make available one hundred billion dollars (US$100 billion) annually to the poorer countries to assist in the fight against climate change, he urged the leaders to find a solution that is “equitable and fair; a solution that levels the playing field; a solution that recognises the historical imbalances between the high emitters and low emitters.”
Aside from his address to the world leaders this year, the Jubilee house says he will deliver five (5) separate statements on efforts Ghana is making to protect her forest and oceans, on sustainable energy and the energy transition, and participate in the Africa Adaption Acceleration Summit, being held on the sidelines of the COP 27.
He was escorted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchey; the Minister for Energy, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP; the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Dr Kwaku Afriyie, MP; the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, MP; and official of the Presidency and Foreign Ministry.
The delegation is expected to return on Friday, November 11 after journeying to New York to chair the United Nations Security Council High-Level debate convened by Ghana, on November 10.
