Akufo-Addo Charges MMDAs To Remove Structures Along Waterways
The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has charged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to dismantle all developments and structures in waterways across the country.
MMDAs are also to ensure the strict adherence to the planning laws of our country, and sanction staff who have issued permits for structures to be built on waterways.
The President says he has established a monitoring unit at Jubilee House that will be reporting directly to him about the progress of the implementation of these directives to the MMDAs as a means of ensuring compliance.
“I am, thus, putting all MMDCEs on notice. You will be held accountable for any breaches that result in damage from flooding. As President of the Republic, I will not allow the selfish acts of a few to jeopardise the collective futures of the rest of us.”
The charge came on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, when the president commissioned four dredging machines to help curb perennial flooding.
Recent rains have wreaked havoc in several parts of the country, especially in the Greater Accra region, destroying structures and rendering many others homeless.
According to President Akufo-Addo, his government, since 2017, has spent some four hundred and fifty million cedis (GH¢450 million) on the flood control programme, which has resulted in a reduced incidence of flooding, particularly in the major flood-prone areas in Accra, such as the Odaw drainage channel.
“However, it is obvious from recent events that more needs to be done to deal with the situation permanently”, he added.
