Ahmed Suale Murder: GJA Welcomes Suspect Arrest as Major Breakthrough

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has welcomed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Investigative Journalist, Ahmed Suale, as a “major breakthrough”.

Commending the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Association noted that this is the first significant progress made in the investigation since the incident in 2019.

“For over six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this marks the first significant progress made by the Police in holding the alleged perpetrators accountable,” it said in a statement.

It, however, looks forward to the arrest of other suspects.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder.”

The GJA holds the view that the unresolved murder incident accounts for the country’s continuous decline in the World Press Freedom Index in recent years.

It has since informed the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect.

ECOWAS Court Petition
It further announced that an engagement with the police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case will take place in the coming days.

The outcome, it noted, will inform its next step on the intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

Suspect
The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and was remanded him into police custody.

He is scheduled to reappear on April 1, 2025.
