African Games Organisers Announce ₵1,200 For Aggrieved Volunteers
The Executive Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 13th African Games, Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare has announced ₵1,200 for aggrieved volunteers who provided services during the Games.
It comes weeks after the volunteers protested and registered their displeasure at the treatment meted out against them by the officials.
The amount, he said includes ₵1,000 allowance and a ₵200 travel and transportation fare.
The u-turn in the payment follows a meeting between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the LOC and the Volunteer sub-committee.
In a statement, Ofosu-Asare said volunteers who have already received their transport fares will receive only an allowance of ₵1,000 while those who are yet to be paid their transport fares will receive a total of ₵1,200.
Volunteers have thus been directed to liaise with the Volunteer Subcommittee for their entitlements.
“To expedite the payment process, volunteers are expected to cooperate with the Volunteer sub-Committee’s management to validate their names and mobile money numbers by close of business on Monday, April 8, 2024.”
It would be recalled that on March 26, 2024, a few days after the closing ceremony of the 13th African Games, volunteers went on a rampage to demand promised payment due from their contractors following alleged threats to eject them from their temporary accommodation at the Games Village.
According to them, officials had promised them a GHC2,000 allowance plus GHC500 transport fares; however, these officials had rescinded the decision.
They were later assured of a GHc200 T&T without the promised allowance.
