Addressing Gender Disparities Requires Overhaul of Systems and Structures- Veep

The Vice President of Ghana, HE Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has postulated that a critical examination of existing systems and structures is key to addressing present-day disparities.
As such, she called for deliberate actions to promote equity and mentor the next generation of women leaders while observing this year’s International Women’s Day on March 11, 2026.
The occasion served as a moment to celebrate the achievements of women while reflecting on the continued efforts required to advance gender equity across society.
In her remarks, the Vice President celebrated women across Ghana, noting that they have played central roles in communities and economies.
She highlighted the contributions of healers, traders, and queen mothers who presided over traditional governance systems, emphasising that Ghana’s cultural heritage reflects the long-standing leadership, knowledge, and innovation of women.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang also paid tribute to women working beyond formal institutions, acknowledging those whose “offices” are found in markets, streets, and small trading spaces across the country. She described these women as the backbone of local economies, demonstrating resilience and determination despite challenging conditions.
Commending the women serving within the Presidency for their dedication and leadership, the Vice President reaffirmed that promoting equity, respect, and opportunity for every woman remains vital to strengthening governance and advancing sustainable national development.
She further called on both men and women to work together to break barriers and ensure that every woman has the opportunity to thrive and fully contribute to the nation’s progress.
