Ablakwa: Akufo-Addo Turns Down Charles Adu Boahen Resignation

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed President Akufo-Addo has bounced the resignation of his Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen.

In a tweet, the MP quizzed the President’s motive for turning down the resignation.

“Parliament may have to turn the heat on President Akufo-Addo.

“Why is he refusing to accept the resignation of Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Charles Adu Boahen?”, he posted.

The move by the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry follows the demand by 80 members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislators to have him either resign or get sacked by the President.

The aggrieved MPs also called for the head of the country’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta over what they described as a downturn in economic growth.

But Ablakwa finds the President’s decision to turn down the resignation as a “downplay” of the “profound economic crisis”.

“The President continues to downplay the profound economic crisis created by his abysmal leadership”, his post concluded.

On Tuesday evening, following the disgruntled MPs’ outburst, the President engaged them and appealed for the Finance Minister to remain at the post till he concluded negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout and presented the 2023 Budget statement.

Reports indicated that the MPs were not moved by the President’s plea.

On Wednesday morning, MP for Subin constituency, Eugene Boakye, said his team was determined to kick the Finance Minister out and stressed that the country is running a democracy and not a “Family dynasty”.

But in a press statement dated October 26, the Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu disclosed that his outfit has agreed to the appeal of the president.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has served the Speaker with a notice on the motion to impeach the Finance Minister.

The House is expected to conduct a secret ballot over the motion on November 10, Ablakwa earlier disclosed.
