A/R: Asantehene Clears Path for Large-Scale Vegetable Production
The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cleared an impediment to the establishment of a large-scale greenhouse vegetable production in the Ashanti Region by Shandong Weiyang Agricultural Science and Technology Limited.
The company with branches in the Greater Accra and the Volta Regions intends to replicate the same in the middle belt, specifically in the Ashanti Region on a 2000-acre land.
The project intended to make the region a food production hub will be called the Asanteman Vegetable Production Centre, the Vice Chair of the Company, Dr Benjamin Mensah informed Otumfuo during a courtesy call on May 31, 2024.
“I went to read a medical program in China and I got familiar with vegetable farming. The city where I schooled produces 80% of China’s food as well as for export and I thought of bringing it to Asanteman,” Mr Mensah made known his inspiration to the Monarch.
This project, he said will champion premium food products, boost exports, and create employment in the region as done in the two regions.
Discerning the impediment to the project before it was even mentioned, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II gave an order for suitable lands to be allotted to the company for the immediate commencement of the project.
He also enjoined the team, “Don’t waste any time after getting the land. We already have an airport here and so we will be able to export the produce. As many lands as we will find for you, I wish you undertake the project on them all. We have the lands for it.”
Among the delegation who visited the Manhyia Palace were the company’s Chairman, Mr Chen Xiaowei, the Executive Director, Mr Kwame Poku and the Director, Mr Reindorf Owusu.
