A Day To June 2022: Gov’t Fails Again At Vaccinating 20M Against Covid
The government of Ghana has for the second time, failed to vaccinate twenty million of Ghana’s adult population against the COVID-19 pandemic as targeted earlier this year.
A day to June 2022, the Ghana Health Service data reveals that 15, 206,934 have been vaccinated.
Out of that number, 9,798,058 have received only the first dose with 6,427,352 double vaxxed.
President Akufo-Addo was hopeful of hitting his target when he announced the 20million target in July 2021; however, during his last COVID address in 2021, he conceded that his ambition was a “race against time”.
The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, on the other hand, blamed the failure on shortages of vaccines during an interview on the GBC Breakfast Show in early 2022.
In March 2022, while updating the country on the Coronavirus pandemic, President Akufo-Addo set another timeline to reach the 20 Million COVID-19 vaccination target.
“Government will continue to engage all religious and traditional leaders, agencies and institutions to encourage their congregants, subjects and citizens, respectively, to be vaccinated, to help achieve the 20 million target by June 2022. I will also urge the media to support this campaign”, he said.
Ghana began a mass vaccination drive in March last year.
With advocacy and public education, the drive was promoted using various platforms to entice the public to get the jab.
