Adwoa Sarfo: I Will Face The Privileges Committee If…

Expat Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Sara Adwoa Sarfo has disclosed that she will appear before the Privileges Committee of Parliament if, among other things, she is served by the committee for her presence.

This, she disclosed in an interview on JoyNews.

According to her, she hasn’t been formally served on her referral therefore she has no idea that she has to return to Ghana to face the committee.

“I know that the Privileges Committee wants me to be in Parliament but as we speak, I don’t know that I’ve been invited. I have to be served and I’m not aware that any such thing has been given to me. I’m just hearing it from you”, she told the interviewer.

“If the Speaker says that you’ve been referred, the committee has to sit and have its own modalities of how we are gonna appear and when and for how many days, and the information they are requiring. I don’t think I have all that information as we speak right now.”

She reiterated that she is versed with the law and therefore knows her rights.

“I’ve been a deputy leader of Ghana’s Parliament and I know the rules…I know the rules and I’ve been a practising lawyer for eighteen years and I don’t have to be served through Joynews and I don’t have to be served through a third party.”

But she noted that she will return to Ghana to face the committee if she gets a notice and the condition of her son- for whom she says is her reason for staying away- favours her.

“If I’m served and I look at the condition and the circumstances right here and I’m able to, why not.”

On April 5, 2022, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin referred three legislators namely, Member of Parliament for Assin North constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central Constituency, Henry Quartey to the Privileges Committee of Parliament in line with Article 97 (1)(c) of the constitution.

It says that a seat in Parliament will be declared vacant “if he (an MP) is absent, without the permission in writing of the Speaker and he is unable to offer a reasonable explanation to the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges from fifteen sittings of a meeting of Parliament during any period that Parliament has been summoned to meet and continues to meet”.
