Deputy Minister For Lands “Saves” Tano River In Part 2 Of “Operation Halt”
A deputy minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker has, through phase two of the “Operation Halt”, saved the Tano river from the hands of illegal miners in the Western Region of Ghana, the Ministry has said.
According to the Ministry, Mireku Duker together with a force undertaking the drive against illegal mining, pounced on a group of persons illegally mining at various “galamsey” sites.
The minister is said to be spearheading a three-day operation under the “Operation Halt II” in the region.
“The first day of the operations saw the team under the command of Brigadier General Amoah Ayisi conduct a successful swoop on some galamsey sites. The Operation Halt II team arrested some illegal miners and decommissioned galamsey equipment at Wassa Dunkwa through to Asankragua in the Western Region.
“Addressing the Media at Wassa Dunkwa, Hon. Duker commended the military for the swift action and condemned the negative activities of the illegal miners. He further indicated that government will continue to fight against the menace which has become a burden on state coffers”, the Ministry relayed.
The Government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry has launched a “relentless” war against illegal mining activities to sanitise the mining sector particularly small-scale mining operations and to also protect the country’s Lands, forests and water bodies.
