How Ministry Of Energy Is Solving Intermittent Power Outages In Kumasi

The Minister for Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh has admitted the capital of the Ashanti region is the most hit when it comes to intermittent power outages in the country.

The Minister relayed that “it is a pure engineering problem and engineering failure that we have to address”.

He noted that a solution will be to establish a power generation system in Kumasi to aid in voltage stabilisation.

“The VRA wants to relocate their Siemens plant 80MW to Kumasi. GRIDCO intends to put an SVC machine so that the voltages can stabilise in Kumasi. Aksa Power wants to put over 250MW plant in Kumasi, Carr power wants to put another over 200MW plant in Kumasi.

“At least what it will do is stabilise the grid and support the GRIDCo operation and those up North.”

He noted that the ECG will also have to work to be able to distribute the energies between their substations and the substations in Kumasi.
