“Dr. Bawumia Is Truly Heartless”- Dafeamekpor
Rockson-Nelson Defeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency has labeled the vice of President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as ‘heartless.’
The tag comes after the announcement of an Electronic Transaction Levy, 1.75% levy on all electronic transactions by the Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
The levy which will be borne by the sender will reflect on mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances.
The levy, also termed as E-levy, has received “the Bawumia tax” from the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Reacting to the development Hon. Dafeamekpor reproved the GHc100 threshold for the new policy.
“The NPP is saying poor people only do momo transactions up to Ghc100. A poor kid in Kpeve receiving & paying school fees of Ghc950 will pay the Bawumia tax. If I send Ghc300 to my Branch Chairman at Dzemeni to buy drugs, he’ll pay the Bawumia tax. Dr. Bawumia is truly heartless”, he tweeted.
The levy, Mr. Ofori Atta indicated will be used to develop entrepreneurship, youth employment, cybersecurity, digital, and road infrastructure among others if it is approved by Parliament to come into force on January 1, 2022.
The NDC caucus in parliament says it will stand by the citizens to oppose the levy.
