Let Prisoners Entertain Children In Schools- Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal team, Lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe has called on the government to put out more innovative means of punishing lawbreakers in Ghana.
This comes on the back of the TV3 report that revealed the Nsawam Prison houses 2,880 prisoners as against an occupancy capacity of 851 persons and a daily fee of 1.80ps for each prisoner.
In an interview on TV3 New Day, Lawyer Tamakloe described the situation as terrible and suggested the conversation about Non-Custodial Sentence be rebirthed.
“It’s a very terrible situation. That brings the issue of a non-custodial sentence. Some of the offenses do not require that the person should go to prison”, he said.
According to him, the prisons can be freed up if innovative punishments are developed.
“That becomes an additional burden on the taxpayer. You can keep people in their houses and allow them to sweep the streets or entertain children in their schools, If a teacher violates the law he shouldn’t be taken to prison. We can be innovative about punishment”, he said.
The Public Relations Officer for Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Mr. Awal Mohammed has admitted the daily amount as feed fee isn’t enough and added, the Interior Minister, Mr. Ambrose Derry has promised to work it out.
To him, the call to free up the various prisons should be championed by lawyers and journalists for the desired effect.
