“I Can’t Stop Corruption”-Kissi Agyebeng

Nominee for the position of the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng has indicated that he has no intention of stopping corruption in the country when given the mandate.

He said before the twenty-five committee that he will be naive to think of bringing corruption to an end in the country.

He noted that his intention is to rather make corruption an expensive venture through his tenure.

“I am not naive to assume that I am coming to stop corruption. There is no way I can stop corruption. God himself will not acclaim to that but I am going to make corruption very costly, very very costly to engage in”, he said before the appointment committee of parliament.

He also revealed that constant systemic review will be employed to make corruption quite expensive in public sector agencies and institutions.

“I’m going to institute systemic reviews of public sector institutions and the development of intergrity plans. This what I intend to do; why can’t we have our own corruption perception index for instance, why can’t I rank public sector agencies against each other and at the end of the year, publicize the result as to which institution is performing well and which is institution is not performing well.

“In that point, if you are the head of an institution and persistently your institution is drawing the short straw in terms of perception of corruption from the point of view of experts and from the point of view of business people, you will sit up.

“The Act empowers me if I’m given the nod by this house to institutionalise risk assessment and inspect public agency. And in doing risk assessment in terms of activities of public sector agencies, it is a form of institutionalisation of that systemic review of their activity”, he added.

Mr. Kissi Agyebeng has been unanimously recommended by the appointment committee and is yet to receive a verdict from the Plenary committee.

When approved, Mr. Agyebeng will become Ghana’s second Special Prosecutor.
