AngloGold Shooting: President Orders Investigations
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an in-depth investigation into the shooting incident at AngloGold Obuasi mine that led to the loss of eight lives over the weekend.
The eight individuals were among about 60 armed illegal miners who attempted to forcibly gain unauthorized access to AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Limited mine infrastructure.
According to the military, the intruders who were wielding locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns, gas cylinders, knives, heavy-duty industrial bolt cutters, axes and machetes opened fire on the military, necessitating defence.
In reaction, the government expressed deep regret over the tragic loss of lives and announced the President had ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of the President, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, assured that “any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice”.
Additionally, the government has charged Anglo-Gold Ashanti (AGA) to absorb the medical cost of the injured and assist the burial arrangement of the deceased.
“Government has meanwhile asked the management of Anglo-Gold Ashanti to bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully and to facilitate the burial arrangements for those who have lost their lives.”
Meanwhile, it said the security agencies have also been tasked to take prompt action to restore peace in the area and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
