Mahama Credits Asantehene for Economic Progress During His Previous Administration

President John Dramani Mahama has publicly credited Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for most of the economic progress his previous administration achieved.

He said that while the country faced economic downturn between 2013 and 2017, the intervention of the King of the Asante Kingdom came in handy to salvage the situation and smoothen his work as President.

Delivering an address at the first Akwasidae Festival of the year on January 19, 2025, he said the King was always readily available to give him his ears and assist him.

His Excellency said His Majesty willfully offered him his influence and international contacts to ease the economic crisis that faced the country.

“Your Majesty, as President between 2013 and 2017, we faced macroeconomic instability and I remember that at the time, some of the times we had obstacles in our way of bringing stability to our economy and restoring economic growth, I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smoothen the path so that it could open up the path towards Prosper and progress and at the time, any time I called on you, you didn’t hesitate.”

The President therefore used the occasion to express his heartfelt gratitude to the Monarch and credit him for some of the breakthroughs his government achieved.

“I wish to thank you for the cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time and to public acknowledge that some of the economic progress that we achieved in that period was due to the work that you did.”

He used the occasion to implore the King to assist him with his intervention in his second coming for the betterment of Ghana.

According to him, the intervention of the King has become urgent as he has inherited a battered economy.

“Your Majesty, as we have inherited a difficult situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time and I know that when I call on you, you will not hesitate so that we can work together and put our nation Ghana back on its feet.”

President Mahama joined the Akwasidae Festival held at the Dwabrem grounds of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

He was accompanied by government officials and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Among them were NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Ashanti Regional Minister-designate, Frank Amoakohene, NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman, Augustus Nana Akwasi Andrews, Former Attorney-General, Betty Mould Iddrisu and the brother of the President, Ibrahim Mahama.
