I’ll Tackle Sewua and Afari Hospitals Completion Immediately- Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has promised to accelerate the completion and commissioning of the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals in the Ashanti Region to augment health infrastructure in the region.
He gave the assurance to the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during the first Akwasidae Festival of the year on January 19, 2025.
In his speech, he recognized that the two facilities were among numerous projects he started in his previous administration which have experienced a hiatus in the past eight years.
Immediate Completion of Sewua
On the Sewua health facility, he said his government would tackle it immediately by providing electricity connection and road infrastructure to make it functional.
“The Sewua hospital is not operational because there is no electricity or water and the road to the hospital has not been constructed. I wish to assure you that we will tackle it immediately and make sure that we can open the doors.”
He noted that the completion of the hospital would ease pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) which is under renovation.
He observes that the renovation project being spearheaded by the Asantehene is being hampered by the full operation of the hospital and thereby his resolve to complete the outstanding parts of the Sewua hospital and relocate the patients to make way for the renovation.
“We need to move some of the patients from Komfo Anokye to Sewua so that we can empty the infrastructure and do the renovations that are necessary. It is difficult to do the renovations of Komfo Anokye when the hospital is working at full capacity and so Nana I assure you that we will work together on that.”
Acceleration of Work on Afari
The President also bemoaned the fact that the Afari hospital was in the advanced stage of completion when he was leaving office in 2017; however, the facility remains at the same stage after eight years.
“I assure you that we are going to accelerate work on the second military hospital in Afari and open its doors so that they can serve the people of Asanteman.”
In his speech, he explained the motive behind the decision to build such a facility in the Ashanti Region.
“During my administration, we decided that there was a need for a second military hospital. The importance of military hospitals is that they are emergency hospitals that provide healthcare at all times to the public and so there are cases where we have had misunderstandings with our doctors and nurses when there has been a strike and the public hospitals are closed, the military hospitals always remain open as emergency hospitals and that is why we decided to build the second military hospital here in Asanteman in Afari.”
