Don’t Abuse Your Power; Asantehene to Traditional Wives

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned his traditional wives against taking advantage of their positions to intimidate the less privileged and their subjects.

The King recognizes that some of his wives manipulate the reality for their parochial interests.

“One of the things I frown upon is intimidating others with your position. Don’t try to use your position to peddle falsehood. That is bad. When you do that, you dishonour me. I don’t want people to stand before me to make complaints against you.”

His Majesty noted that persons who engage in such activities, when proven culpable, would not be spared despite his love for them.

“Despite the love I have for you, I will stand by the principles of truth. Remember how the Asantehene sacrificed Agyaponmaa his wife, wrapped her bead around his gun and went to war with it? I will plead with you to lead honourably.”

Otumfuo made these remarks when Lady Julia Osei Tutu organized a luncheon at the Manhyia Palace on January 5, 2025, for his co-wives.

Known as “Aheneyere” in the local dialect, these female leaders are successors to wives who were taken by Occupants of the Golden Stool and enstooled as Queens in selected areas across Asanteman.
