Eat Hot Meals and Prioritise Hand Washing This Xmas- GHS Boss

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye has entreated the general public to prioritise their wellbeing and health by adopting hygienic measures this festive season.

In a press statement providing an update on the outbreak of cholera in the country, he advised against consuming cold meals.

Additionally, he counselled the public to make handwashing a tradition.

“As we enter the Christmas season, we are entreated to drink potable water, eat food that is hot, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consuming and wash our hands with soap under running water before preparing food, before eating and after visiting the toilet (and washroom) or changing diapers, and after touching surfaces.”

Meanwhile, persons experiencing signs of cholera were directed to visit the nearest health facility for medical attention.

“The Ghana Health Service continues to urge people who have diarrhoea and vomiting to report to the nearest health facility.”

Since the outbreak of the disease in October 2024, 35 deaths have been recorded in the Greater Accra Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, Western Region, and Ashanti Region.

Of these, the Western Region has the highest number of reported deaths at 17.

In his update in a press statement, Dr Kuma Aboagye said there are no active cases in the Eastern Region, with most of the affected districts in the other regions reporting no confirmed cases in the past week.

However, as of December 23, he said a total of 4,155 suspected cases had been reported with the majority of the deaths occurring within 24 hours of admission.
