Shut Down Power Plants Resume Operation- ECG, GRIDCo

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced the resumption of operation of power plants that were shut down as a result of the suspension of gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO).

In a press statement, the two entities noted that thermal power plants in Tema have resumed.

“The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) wish to inform the general public that the gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) for thermal power plants in Tema has resumed.

“All power plants that shut down have been restored to operation. Power supply to all affected customers has also been restored,” they said in a joint press statement.

In a statement issued on December 11, the WAPCo announced that during the cleaning and inspection of the 56km x 30 onshore pipeline section between Itoki and Badagry, part of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) in Nigeria, a larger-than-expected volume of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station.

It said this triggered some operational upsets at Tema Regulatory & Metering Station, requiring a temporary shutdown for safety reasons and investigation.

A follow-up joint statement issued by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the exercise was causing a shortfall in power supply, requiring some limited load management.

It explained that the shutdown of the Tema station had forced the temporary closure of some thermal power plants in Tema, leading to a shortfall in electricity generation.
