V/R: EC Officer Questioned over Unescorted Transportation of Electoral Materials
A district electoral officer in the Afadjato South Constituency in the Volta Region has been subjected to police scrutiny over the transportation of electoral materials without a police escort.
In a statement issued a day before the election, the Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed that the said officer whose identity has been withheld, was transported in a private vehicle and without escort.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that officers of the Ghana Police Service yesterday questioned the Commission’s District Electoral Officer for the Afadjato South in the Volta Region for transporting election materials in a private vehicle without police escort.”
While the materials were seized by the police, the officer was also questioned for this action, the statement said.
His conduct, according to the Commission, violates the guidelines of the EC.
Per the Commission’s policy, Electoral Materials must be transported in official vehicles with police escorts where necessary.
Despite this, the EC is certain that the election of the said constituency won’t be affected in any way.
“We wish to assure the public that though the officer breached the policy of the Commission, the officer’s action will not in any way compromise the elections in the Afadjeto South Constituency.”
Meanwhile, the Commission says it will be conducting its own investigation.
