Asantehene to Convert House of Prempeh I Into Museum
Plans are far advanced for Asanteman to add up to their many museums.
In the next few months, the Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, plans repurpose a rest house of Sir Agyemang Prempeh I near the International Airport in Kumasi into a Museum.
This forms part of efforts to immortalise the late King who self-sacrificed himself for the survival of the Asante Kingdom over a century ago.
“There is a British house at the airport where Nana used to take some rest when he was on leave. You decided to put my name on it {airport} but I opposed to preserve the contribution of Nana to Asanteman.”
“I have told the Minister I will be working on the house to prepare it as a Museum. All his furniture in there will be kept there to save his memory.”
The King was exiled to Seychelles in 1900 on the back of his resistance to colonial rule when he gave himself up to save Asanteman from another war few years after the ravages of the 1874 Sagrenti War.
He spent nearly 25 years in exile which encompasses a year at Elmina Castle, three years in Sierra Leone and the rest in Seychelles.
Asanteman has set aside three days to celebrate the bravery and salvation delivered by the late King in the self-sacrifice.
