Abandon Plan to Strike; NLC to GHA Workers
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to halt its intended strike action which was announced to take effect on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
After hearing the parties involved, the Commission ruled that the Senior Staff Association and the Divisional Union of Construction and Buildings Workers Unions did not follow the due process by declaring their strike.
This was after the Ministry of Roads and Highways had filed a formal complaint with the NLC over the intended strike.
According to the Commission, the issuance of the strike notice did not follow the Labour Act 2003 (ACT 651).
It therefore directed, “The Respondents- Senior Staff Association and the Divisional Union of Construction and Buildings Workers Unions of GHA (CBWU-TUC) are to follow the due processs.
“Whilst awaiting for the respondents to follow the due process, they must suspend any and/or all intended strike action.”
The meeting was convened on November 11, 2024.
The GHA workers’ announced an industrial action effective November 12 over government’s refusal to halt the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).
They are also demanding the removal of the Chairman of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) Board, Ing. I.K. Mensah, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Ing. Collins B. Donkor.
